The Slavic peoples, originating on the upper areas of the Vistula and Dnieper rivers in the times of the Roman Empire, expanded over centuries to occupy much of Eastern Europe. Despite being separated into different branches and forming many different states and kingdoms, their shared cultural ancestry remains.
