목화는 중앙아시아에서 유래했으나 유럽에서는 널리 사용되지 않았습니다. 이후 목화는 아메리카 식민지에 도입되었고, 18세기 후반에는 양모의 저렴하면서도 질 좋은 보완재 혹은 대체재로 의류 산업에 널리 쓰이기 시작했습니다.
