After several months of exchange of verbal blows in the form of insulting letters, the forces of Bayezid and Timur clashed with each other in the fateful Battle of Ankara of 1402. Despite the Sultan's resounding military achievements in the past, the battle against Timur ended in a fatal defeat which resulted in his capture and the Ottoman Interregnum.
