Led by Afonso de Albuquerque, he managed to secure a city that would become one of the most vital outposts for Portugal. Knowing that neighboring states would try and secure the strait for themselves, it was heavily fortified to ensure that did not happen. Malacca remained under Portuguese control until 1641 when the Dutch were able to secure the port.
