Following the death of Emperor Maximilian I in 1519, the Austrian estates refused to recognize the old government installed by the late emperor, forming their own rebellious estate-led regime. The trial turned into a tribunal against the new estate government, accusing its leaders of unlawfully usurping authority and inciting the people. Ferdinand ordered only the ringleaders to be punished, leading to the execution of both noble and commoner leaders of the rebellion.
