Its main objective was to handle the rising expenses and debt due to their war against Venice for economic supremacy in the Mediterranean. Based in the Palazzo San Giorgio, it served as the main financial institution of Genoa, even to the point of administering many of the country's overseas territories, either directly or indirectly. Up until is closure by Napoleon in 1805, the bank served many rulers and personalities of Europe, from Christopher Columbus to Emperor Charles V.
