He would come to spend considerable time on the island of Madagascar, where he collected fruits for his crew. These were found to be effective against scurvy, a ravaging vitamin deficiency that plagued sailors on their long journeys. His findings would lead to the Admiralty mandating lemon juice for all sailors.
