12638historical_info = flavor_eng.131.historical_info Originally a large manor owned by the Archbishops of York, the Whitehall palace was expanded to become the largest palace in Europe, hosting the privy council, theatrical performances, banquets, and serving as the primary royal residence. It was the administrative center of the Tudor and Stuart periods and would remain so until a fire in 1698 destroyed most of the complex. Today, only the Banqueting House remains.
