It was triggered by religious policies and the dissolution of the monasteries, but overall discontent towards Thomas Cromwell and the tax policies he implemented played a significant part. King Henry VIII initially offered a pardon, but would rescind on his word and violently suppress the rebellion. Thousands of rebels were executed with little achieved despite the considerable support it had garnered.
