As the Ottomans expanded into the Balkans during the fourteenth century, Bulgaria, already internally weakened and fragmented, found itself on the front line of a rising great power. Though Bulgarian forces were at times able to resist the Ottoman advance and fought several indecisive battles, they eventually fell to the superior Ottoman armies. The fall of Vidin in 1396 brought the last remnants of Bulgarian independence to an end and marked the beginning of nearly half a millennium of Ottoman rule over Bulgarian lands.
