宗教戦争
数十年にわたる宗教対立のすえ、神聖ローマ帝国におけるキリスト教の正しい教義をめぐる意見の不一致は、プロテスタント同盟とカトリック連盟の武力衝突が避けられない段階に達した。帝国諸侯によるこれらの組織の主な目的は信仰を守ることだが、混乱する帝国をヨーロッパ諸国の多くの指導者たちが狙っている。その原動力が宗教的な信念であれ、世俗的な野心であれ、とにかくヨーロッパの並み居る列強国たちは戦いに備えており、帝国の平和の存続は危ういバランスを保っている。
