Après plusieurs décennies de conflits religieux, les dissensions relatives à la pratique appropriée du culte Chrétien dans le Saint-Empire romain germanique ont atteint un stade où l'affrontement armé entre l'Union protestante et la Sainte Ligue catholique semble inévitable. Tandis que ces associations de princes impériaux s'inquiètent de protéger leurs religions, de nombreux dirigeants en Europe lorgnent avec cupidité sur l'Empire en proie à la tourmente. Qu'elles soient animées par la ferveur religieuse ou par l'avidité terrestre, les plus grandes puissances d'Europe préparent leurs armées au combat, car la paix au sein de l'Empire est en péril.
