Concile de Trente
Convoqué à Trente, le Concile de Trente fut la réponse Catholique à la La Réforme, qui s'est traduite par une tentative de mettre fin à cette dernière ainsi que de remanier légalement et politiquement l'Église catholique. Durant cette période, tout membre du clergé était en droit de proposer des réformes majeures, même si le dernier mot revenait toujours à la Curie et au Rome concernant leur mise en œuvre.
