12historical_info = twilight_of_the_tsardom.1.historical_info After the death of Ivan Asen II in 1241, Bulgaria fell into a prolonged period of weak rule, noble infighting, and Mongol raids. Successive rulers failed to resist foreign encroachment, which resulted in major territorial losses. Internal instability peaked with the uprising of Ivaylo and continued through decades of civil strife and foreign interference. Although a brief recovery occurred in the early 14th century, the defeat at Velbazhd in 1330 and renewed external pressures left Bulgaria weakened and increasingly vulnerable by 1337. The weakened nation would never recover from the struggle, and would ultimately fall at the hands of the Ottomans.
