Tens or even hundreds of thousands of old wooden houses have been destroyed, and the Old Jewish quarter was especially affected. Grand Vizier is eager to oversee the reconstruction, but has a novel idea for how to finance it. he/she would like to forbid reconstruction of the many churches and synagogues that were destroyed, and instead auction out those plots to proper Muslim citizens.

In the aftermath, Vani Mehmet Efendi, a preacher of the radical Islamic Kadızadeli movement, claimed that the disproportionate destruction of Jewish properties had been a punishment from Allāh. Although Christians were eventually allowed to buy back the land of their burned-down churches, the Jews were not so lucky. Grand vizier Köprülü Fazıl Ahmed seems to have listened to the Kadızadeli, and confiscated all the synagogue plots.
