104historical_info = flavor_tim.3.historical_info Ulugh Beg, grandson of Timur, became the governor of Samarkand at the age of sixteen. Even in his teenage years, he had a great interest in science and wanted to turn the city into an intellectual center. He built a madrassa and later an observatory, both of which still survive to this day. Ulugh Beg's observatory gained renown all over the Islamic world, and through his observations there he managed to discover several errors in the discoveries of Ptolemy that were in use at that time. He also managed to calculate the duration of the tropical year more accurately than Copernicus and even the Earth's axial tilt.
