However, the Swiss cantons gained more and more autonomy over time, reducing the influence of the Holy Roman Emperor in the region in the process, making them de facto independent by 1499. The Treaty of Westphalia in 1648 recognized the independence of the Swiss Confederacy and confirmed the Swiss lands to be no longer part of the Empire.
