The Well-Intended Orphanage
A noteworthy idea is being presented by cabinet member Ivan Betskoy to tackle what is perceived as one of the greatest travesties taking place, namely the abandonment of newborn children. It is being suggested that we establish a safe refuge for the less fortunate, and provide them with sustenance and literature to ensure they grow up to become productive members of society. 5435historical_info = flavor_rus.53.historical_info The Moscow Orphanage was established in 1763 under the direction of Empress Catherine 'the Great' and Ivan Betskoy, a minister in her government and great advocator of educational reforms. The institution was conceived when Enlightenment ideals were gaining traction in Russia and across Europe. Despite being well-funded, it was plagued by high infant mortality rates and had limited impact on the lives of abandoned children, although some did benefit from the education provided and were able to secure employment as a result.
