1826historical_info = flavor_rus.19.historical_info Stenka Razin gained fame and wealth through successful raids on Persian and Russian settlements. In 1670, he launched a campaign against the czar's Volga fortress cities, seizing Tsaritsyn and Astrakhan with a force of 7,000 Cossacks. Engaging in debauchery and atrocities, Razin replaced local governments with Cossack self-rule. His rebellion spread, capturing Saratov and advancing to Simbirsk. Facing a loyalist army, Razin suffered a decisive defeat in 1671, leading to his capture, torture, and execution in Moscow's Red Square.
