The Tower of Belem
The port of Lisbon has seen significant growth in importance over the last decades. While the port and the Tagus River grew in their significance, our fortifications along the mouth of the river have fallen behind. We have received a proposal from an Country Adjective architect to build a new fortification along the shore of the river to protect the city.

288historical_info = flavor_por.5.historical_info Commissioned by Manuel I, the Tower of Belem was built in the early 16th century to defend the mouth of the Tagus River. It was built in the Manueline, or Portuguese late Gothic, style. The tower was improved in 1571 but fell after only a few hours of siege in 1580 to the forces of the Spanish Duke of Alba. The dungeons of the Tower later served as a prison.
