Two decrees were issued, initially aiming at expulsion but later transforming into forced conversion in 1497. Portuguese Jews were forcibly baptized, and those who resisted were deported to São Tomé and Príncipe. The Portuguese conversos faced hardship, with a massacre in Lisbon in 1506 and the establishment of the Portuguese Inquisition in 1536, reflecting a tumultuous period of religious persecution.
