When we first arrived on the shores of India, the news of followers of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ soon reached our ears. They were facing persecution from the more numerous Muslim people and the followers of Hinduism, so a common interest to ally each other crystallized.
However, as our people started to live with them, they soon realized that they had different rites and uses of our religion that are not always approved. Many voices are claiming that we should intervene and bring them back to the proper path, while others argue that they should be allowed to continue following their rites.

The Portuguese, aiming to dominate the spice trade and spread their Christianity, established the Padroado Real, conferring ecclesiastical authority in conquered territories. Initially measured, Portuguese subjugation of the Saint Thomas Christians intensified after 1552, with strategic moves leading to the isolation of the community from its hierarchy by 1575. In 1599, the Archbishop of Goa, Aleixo de Menezes, secured the submission of the last Metropolitan, initiating the Synod of Diamper.
The Synod, convened by Menezes, implemented liturgical reforms, anathematized certain customs, and formally brought the Saint Thomas Christians into the Catholic Church. However, Portuguese actions, including burning Syriac texts and eliminating caste status, stirred resentment and fueled open resistance in the community over the ensuing years, marking a complex period of cultural and religious clashes.
