Our Colonial Subject in Brazil recently had trouble in finding a unified response to the piracy along the coast. While these issues are small in scale right now we should act now to prevent it from growing out of control. Appointing a capable governor would be the first step towards this goal.

The land owners, often captains, settled colonists in their respective Captaincies and were required to provide them with protection and justice. As these Captaincies were independent, they were unable to defend themselves from foreign pirates. Sent to Brazil by decree of King João III of Portugal, De Sousa was successful in combating piracy and intensifying colonization efforts into the interior of Brazil. In 1534 he was established as a donatary captain of São Vicente for his efforts.
