Following the Mongol invasion, the choice of heir has been heavily influenced by the Khān, as a means of pitting the various principalities against each other and preserving the balance of power in the Russia region.
Recently, there have been calls for change, with the current ruler having gained power via inheritence, as stipulated in a legal will authored by his/her father. Alas, it seems there was a clause in the contract that promised leadership to a close relative of Ruler, should he/she inherited the throne at a very young age. The rule is openly being challenged by Pretender, who seems to have already mustered considerable support among the population.

In the following century, Muscovy grew in power and attempted to challenge the authority of the Mongols by allowing the throne to pass to the son of Vasily I, the ruling prince. Following his passing, the move was challenged by his brother due to different interpretations of his will, and the ensuing civil war resulted in a decades-long power struggle known as the Muscovite War of Succession.
