Upper Hungary has always been home to both the Slovak people and the many different groups that have come to exploit the rich mines of the area. Inspired by the burgeoning pan-Slavic movement and the ideals of the Enlightenment, Slovak intellectuals and visionaries dream of a unified Slovak nation that would enjoy a special status and an autonomous rule within the realm. They tirelessly labor to codify and organize the Slovak language, laying the foundations for a distinct literary tradition. Embracing this fervent spirit of national revival could foster a sense of unity and pride among the Slovak people, but conceding to their requests of autonomy might eventually lead to the fragmentation of our country.
