Sent to Versailles after the peace of Nijmegen to supervise the execution of its clauses, he became Raad Pensionaris in 1688 after William moved to England. A tough negotiator and obstinate opponent of France, he was at the core of all anti-French coalitions that were set up in all the wars of the late 17th century. He died in 1720.
