Having taken over from Antwerp the role of leading financial place, the stock exchange flourished. Funds from all over Europe would become available and loans were easily accessible, at rates unmatched anywhere else. This was enhanced by the capitalistic success of the Dutch East India Company (1602) and even of the less successful West India Trade Company (1621).
