Gaismair turned against the entrenched privileges of the nobility and the Catholic Church. After the outbreak of rebellion in 1525, he drafted radical reforms, including equality before the law, the election of judges and priests, and even the abolition of the Catholic Church. Despite his efforts to organize a democratic Christian peasant state, his rebellion was ultimately crushed.
