Upon his return, he was sorrow-struck, the nursery had been ravaged, the babe gone and Guinefort was stained in another's blood.
In a fit of rage for the loss of his son, the knight slew the dog, only to then find his child safe among the wreckage. Near the child was a viper that the dog had caught while protecting the baby. The blood on the dog belonging to said reptile. Realizing his hasty mistake, the knight repentantly ordered a shrine to be built for the dog at the bottom of a well. To this day, the people of Lyon visit the shrine to pray for the well-being of their ill children.
