3772historical_info = flavor_eng.34.historical_info Founded two years before its Dutch counterpart, the English East India Company struggled in its early years. Its first trading posts in the Moluccas, including Amboina, and in Indonesia were soon overrun and shut down by the Dutch, forcing the company to shift focus to India, establishing bases in Madras, Bombay, and Calcutta. There, it achieved its greatest success, evolving from small harbor trading posts into a vast Indian empire under Warren Hastings and Robert Clive from 1757 onward, eventually controlling most of the subcontinent. The company outlasted all rivals and remained until the British government took control in 1867 after the Sepoy Revolt of 1857.
