He then entered Edinburgh, declaring his father James as King of Scotland, and marched into England, reaching Derby. However, the promised French support never arrived, forcing him to retreat. His army was pursued by the British forces, and in April 1746, Charles was decisively defeated at the Battle of Culloden by the British army under Cumberland. This defeat marked the end of the Jacobite uprising and the Stuarts' last serious attempt to reclaim the throne. Charles's failure to heed the advice of his generals sealed the dynasty's fate.
