1800historical_info = flavor_eng.15.historical_info Lady Jane Grey, granddaughter of King Henry VIII's younger sister Mary, held a claim to the English throne. In 1553, she was married against her will to Lord Guildford Dudley, son of the Duke of Northumberland. Northumberland, King Edward VI's regent, manipulated Jane to maintain his power after the king's death. Edward VI's illness led Northumberland to have him sign a document excluding Henry VIII's daughters, Mary I and Elizabeth I, from the throne in favor of Jane, who was proclaimed queen on July 10, 1553, but her reign only lasted for nine days. Mary's Catholic claim to the throne was supported by the country, leading to the dispersal of Northumberland's forces by troops loyal to Mary.
