He then made an arrangement with the future Valdemar IV, son of the previous king, to go against Gerhard III and in exchange he promised his own sister in marriage to the future king. She would bring a dowry of vast amounts of territory in Northern Jutland, giving him a powerful position from where to launch his future campaigns to reunify Denmark and reestablish his control over it.
