After studying in the West, most notably at the University of Bologna, he wrote several treatises, such as Instrumentum Pneumaticum Circulandi Sanguinis sive modu usu pulmonum. Afterward, he served under Sultan Mehmed IV, helping in negotiations that led to the Treaty of Karlowitz in 1699, and managed to gain considerable power in the Ottoman court, allowing his family to rule Moldavia.
