Nanboku-chō Jidai
Após o desmembramento do Xogunato Kamakura, o governo imperial foi restabelecido sob Takaharu com a ajuda de Takauji no que ficou conhecido como Restauração Kenmu. Entretanto, os dois antigos aliados rapidamente tornaram-se rivais implacáveis. Takaharu queria restaurar a supremacia do governo imperial como era no Período Heian, causando o descontentamento de várias pessoas da classe guerreira, incluindo Takauji. Ele foi expulso da capital e obrigado a fugir para Kyūshū, mas conseguiu voltar para Kyōto em 1336 e conquistá-la, estabelecendo um novo Xogunato Japonês sob seu comando e nomeando um novo Imperador. Em janeiro de 1337, Takaharu fugiu da capital e estabeleceu sua própria corte em Yoshino, dando início ao período conhecido como Nanboku-chō Jidai, as Cortes do Norte e do Sul.
