The weekly congregational prayer has been a way for Muslim rulers to show their legitimacy for centuries. In the long-standing Sunni dominance, most Friday prayers have been in the name of the Sunni Ḵalīfa or Sultan of the time. This has however led to the status of such prayers being very uncertain in our Shiite Flavor Rank.
Most among the Shiite Clergy oppose the practice of the directed Friday prayers, seeing it as just something that Sunni rulers do, but there are some who would see its role as a way to bind together society, both Clergy and Ruler Title.
