The Šayḵ al-Islām
The time seems ripe for us to once and for all make the Šayḵ al-Islām an official state position, with supreme authority over Fatwa rulings, mufti appointments and other matters of faith. Though it would ultimately strengthen the Clergy, it would at the same time work to ensure that their interests aligns with those of the state.

They thus reintroduced the Šayḵ al-Islām title, which originated in Eastern Iran, to be the highest ranking religious authority of the realm - though perhaps next to the sultan himself. It was a reciprocal relationship; the Šayḵ al-Islām would be appointed by the sultan, only to confirm the next sultan upon the former's death.
