Prominent leaders from among the Commoners have complained about the behavior of the Bashi Bazouk irregulars that we have been using to staff frontier garrisons. The Bashi Bazouk, they claim, are prone to plundering and harassing not only enemy lands, but also our own rural population on the frontier. And now, there has been an incident in Atrocity Location, where Bashi Bazouks allegedly committed a terrible act of violence against an innkeeper and his family. Infuriated by this, the Commoners leaders demand that we discipline the Bashi Bazouk regiments as a whole.

This meant that they were very affordable for the Ottoman state, but they soon became infamous for preying on civilians. The word Bashi Bazouk eventually became synonymous with "bandit" in many languages.
