Selim III attempted to establish new army barracks in Edirne and other locations in Rumelia, which caused an armed confrontation with elements of the Janissary corps and local Ayans. As the conflict quickly expanded, the sultan had to relent and send his troops back to Constantinople, dealing a mortal blow to his prestige as well as his attempts at centralizing the administration of the empire.
