To his contemporaries, Osmanzâde Tâib was the most famous, given the title reîs-i şâirân, leader of poets, by Sultan Ahmed III himself. Osmanzade's works were characterized by their wit, and his jokes eventually got him killed by the governor of Egypt. His contemporary Nedîm was perhaps a bit too innovative for the time, known for a slightly decadent style that sometimes criticized Persianate poetic tradition, but also highlighted the beauty of Constantinople.
