Circassian Cariye is a hitherto rather unknown Cariye concubine in the Country Adjective harem, but she does not lack ambition. She wants desperately to be painted by Italian Painter, a talented artist she has befriended through her Kira intermediary. Circassian Cariye promises that the painting would be modest and not break with Muslim tradition, but still be a celebration of her rare Circassian beauty, to the envy of all of Europe.

Circassians, especially women, were long thought of as especially beautiful, spirited and elegant. Circassian slave concubines were much sought after in the Islamic world, and extremely expensive. They eventually came to make up a majority of the concubines in many harems. The Circassian beauties were celebrated in Europe as well, and became a staple of orientalist art in the 18th and 19th centuries.
