Secret societies belonging to the Freemason brotherhood are growing in popularity among the Burghers. The Freemasons organize in lodges and swear upon the holy book, but their activities are otherwise kept secret, and largely unknown to the agents of the Sublime Porte. The Freemasons themselves claim that they are only doing harmless charity work and fraternizing, but members of the Clergy caution us that the Freemasons surreptitiously spreads atheistic and subversive Western ideas, and that it would be wise to ban them.

The first lodges were established during the Tulip Period in the 1720s, but were soon banned, accused of spreading atheist ideas. Many decades later, the ban was lifted, but Freemasonic ideas had already come to influence nationalistic secret societies such as the Filiki Eteria, who played a major part in the Greek quest for independence.
