The Grievances of the Scribes
The moveable-type printing press introduced by Muteferrika has been a boon to learning, but is facing new opposition from the many scribes among the Birûn and the Mālīye. Fearful that it will supplant their work entirely, they now demand that we close down the press, and they have found support among a seditious group of Janissaries. We may face a rebellion, if we do not acquiesce, but what is a printing press compared to the stability of the Flavor Rank?

Among its detractors where not only some of the 'Ulamā, but also many scribes, influential within the bureaucracy, who worried that their trade would be ruined. This eventually compelled sultan Ahmed III to close down the press. Decades later, the British diplomat James Mario Matra made another attempt to set up a new printing press in Istanbul, but faced similar opposition, and he too failed.
