Burghers and city-dwellers are increasingly frustrated at the privileges long enjoyed by servants of the state. In Janissary Location, there are reports that the Janissary Barracks themselves have been infiltrated by ambitious merchants, who have used their connections to become part of the order and thus gain access to the status its members enjoy. There could certainly be economic benefits for the Sublime Porte if we allow this to continue, but it might also diminish the standing and skill of the Janissaries, who have for centuries been a fearsome presence on the battlefield.
