Some think it arrived with traders from Java, where shadow plays had been performed since the Middle Ages. By the 16th century, these often satirical and irreverent plays were performed in every city of the Ottoman Empire. Šayḵ al-Islām Ebüssuûd Efendi issued a famous ruling that the plays were indeed permissible by Islamic law. In later centuries however, they would come to be repressed by the rulers due to their political content.
