Although she was aware of the issues addressed in the work, Catherine banned it and sentenced him to death, in an attempt to limit the impact of his publication. The sentence was later converted into exile to Siberia. The novel became a source of influence for the Decembrist movement, and would end up being suppressed until 1905.
