613historical_info = flavor_por.11.historical_info In the year 1578, King Sebastião of Portugal embarked on an expedition to conquer Morocco, where Portugal already held the regions of Tangiers and Ceuta. Shortly after his landing, at the battle of al-Qaşr al-Kabīr, the Moroccan Berbers of Moulay Ismaïl so soundly defeated the Portuguese army that the king was killed, along with most of the Portuguese nobility fighting with him. This disaster led the way to Spanish control of Portugal and was the starting point of Portugal's decline.
