1650historical_info = flavor_pol.22.historical_info Stanislaus Poniatowski undertook a second effort to reform the Polish state in 1787, approaching Russia for an alliance in exchange for support for the establishment of a Polish army. This offer was rejected by Catherine the Great and led to the eventual partitioning of Poland. The Constitution of May 3, 1791 was nevertheless passed, making it the first codified national constitution in Europe. It was short-lived — the Russo-Polish War of 1792 and the Second Partition followed within a year.
