2775historical_info = flavor_pap.1000.historical_info In 1540 Pope Paulus III recognized the Jesuit Order, created in 1534 by the Spaniard Don Íñigo López de Oñaz y Loyola, better known as Saint Ignatius of Loyola. He became one of the most devoted counter-reformists and enemy number one of the Lutheran movement. Loyola, having a soldier background, made its mark on the order, which was organized almost as an army. High priority was given both to educating missionaries but also counselors for European royal courts. This made the Jesuit order very powerful in the political scene. In 1773 the Jesuit order was dissolved by Pope Pius VI due to pressure from Christian countries in the Age of Enlightenment. In 1814 the Jesuit order was reinstituted, however, it emerged as a faint shadow of the powerful order it once had been.
