Its primary objective was to establish a historical connection between the principality of Muscovy and the Roman Emperors, particularly Augustus, but it also served as a means to conceive the idea of Muscovy as the Third Rome and natural successor to the Eastern Roman Empire, which has collapsed following the conquest of Constantinople.
